How many kilometres could you do with a new set of tyres, before changing them?. I had my bike serviced and the technician passed my tyres thread, despite having done 31,000 kilometres. They are Bridgestone. I use my bike for commuting only.

That depends on the road type (gravel, asphalt, concrete, chip and seal, or other), how you use the bike (commuting, racing, carving twisties), what kind of tires they are (single, dual, triple compound)(racing tire, touring tire, or general purpose tire), how closely you monitor tire pressures, and how agressive you ride.

I have heard any where from 4,000 miles = 6,400 km
to
14,000 miles to 22,530 km

As Leem said.. Just check the tread depth and make sure you arent flattening out too much or cupping too bad.

change them now, as in, a few thousand km ago...

tread depth is not the only indicator of a bad tire... heat cycles kill them

So, it is not only the mileage and wear, it is also the age of the tire needs to be considered.
How old is too old for the tire then?

I always read and heard (including the Dunlop guy at the IMCS this spring) say that throw the tires after 5 years from the production date. The heat cycle aging though, I have no idea on..Everyone is different but for me I guess it is nice with my commuting : I will never get more than 1.5 yrs from a tire anymore - if even that.

Oh, and what oil should I use?

I don't recommend Oil... I just heat up and pour in some Nutella! That way it gets some peanut oil and I get a nice faint aroma of chocolate as I ride!

I have no idea... I've pushed my tires to the 16k mile mark (never again) and they were flat spotted and down to the tread marks.... I've read posts where people say you'll go through tread before you hit the heat cycle life and others where people will only run them on track days for 2-3 sessions before they feel shot but have plenty of tread, but how you can get almost 20k miles of life and still have tread to pass inspection is beyond me...

and yes, the heat cycle vs. storage is different... the chemicals you pick up off the road will vary widely... VA has been putting down pre-snow treatments... supposedly it won't effect tires once dried, but they spray that crap during rush hour... ugh...

I need a new front tire every year and a rear ever 2/3rds of a year so I am pretty sure that I don't hit the 5 year mark on any of my vehicles.

yeah, but then you get the urge to stop in at their store (I think I saw a store on TV when Larry The Cable Guy did his Only in America Episode there!) and just spend too much $ with all those goodies and smells!

I change mine when the rear start to flat spot a bit much. I double stint the front this time but won't do it again. Really to save $80.00 a year... not worth it.

Just like Dart said. Tire get harder with time and heat cycle... loose grip. On race cars has the tires warm up they peak usually on the 2-4 laps +/- 5-8 miles then get stable for 50 miles. By the time you got around 60 miles there shut! It can change from track to track or with temperature. Softer tires are not always better...

I ride on asphalt/concrete only. commuting only. The tyres are sport touring, and 3 years old, do not know what sort of compound though. I am not aggressive at all.
