Marthy Trunk/Soft Saddlebags Rack

Ok, so I got the powder coat quote this morning and the 3 luggage racks should be ready later on this week. I piled up all the numbers together and by the time I had some labor I end up with $145.00 + shipping. A little bit higher that expected... I was aiming for $125.00.
At $145.00 it still a good deal for a trunk rack and soft saddlebags support.

That seems reasonable, but too rich for my blood. I'm just looking for saddlebag supports right now. Not planning on having a trunk until I get a new bike and turn the 6R into a full time tourer. Next year maybe.
Do you think it would be possible to make two separate brackets that angle down from the grab bar anchors? Some simple 1/2" X 1/8" steel, that comes straight down with a couple of angle bends and comes down to the bottom of where the saddlebags are then connected together with cross bracing for support. Would that be enough to keep the saddlebags in a good position?
I don't know if my description is good enough to give you the mental image I have in my head, and I'm not a good enough artist or CAD designer to send you a picture.

Is there any way you could give us an idea of what it might take to do just the saddle bag supports without the rear trunk platform?? Pretty please!?
To do it is not a problem at all, very easy. The problem is to be able to make it in the $50-$75 range. Powder coat only cost 30... + material. And minimum wage in Florida is a bit over $7/h. LOL
If no one care about Powder Coat finish, I can do it and you spray paint it...
So 2 of you are interested on the saddlebags support so far, any other ones. Serious please. I don't mind spending the weekend and $$$ to build rack, but I don't want to stare at them for months...
What kind of bags do you have? Mine are MotoCentrix. All I need is the shape or I can eye ball something close to...

Also, I don't mind the truck rack, it would give me a place to bungy another small bag to, but I just don't see myself getting a trunk in the near future.

The rear part is just flat. You could put a little rack there... That's why I did mine like this, and those 3 also. It can be customize to your needs. :thumbup:

In other words, how much pressure does it take to squeeze and cause the supports to flex? I'm just curious because I am using my bags for grocery shopping and have to carry a couple gallons of milk and I don't want the supports flexing inward....that would kinda defeat the purpose of the racks.
When I did my first one on my bike, I went way over design. If I sit on the rack and it doesn't move. The bike frame flex, but the rack doesn't. I also used 3/8" rod for the bag support... same thing.
So when I did the last 3 I kind of when a little smaller everywhere. It did cut the weight by almost 1/3 if it's not 1/2! It was flexing a bit too much on the saddlebag support. But I add the bracket that hook up to the rear pegs and it's fine. Usually those bags are rated for 10 lbs per side, I push them to 15 on big trip.
Even if I trim a lot of weight out of those new rack, it still plenty strong for what it need to do. It still pass Marthy fat a$$ non-destructive test! It does flex if I sit on it, but so the frame of the bike. That's 165 lbs on the rack! The biggest Givi is rated for 22lbs... add the hardware + the weight of the box... 30 lbs or so. So with a design security factor of 5:1... it should be safe.
One more thing... I think it will look great with a little rack. Just big enough to put a little tail bag (or tank bag) with a passenger...

They look really good Marthy!! I would love to buy these from you, but things have become suddenly very tight for me. I have some $ saved for fun bike stuff, but I think I need to prioritize and save it for if/when you do more windshields. that is first on my desire list so am locking my $ for that right now!!!

They looks a little cumbersome for shipping. Have you considered a bolt together version for that back tray, to make it fit in a flatter box?
Shipping is definitely a little steep. When I build those 3 I had fab cost in mind. Try to make it as nice and inexpensive as I can. If I had to build 20 of those... I'll make it different, bold on saddlebags support will be the way to go. Specially it seams like the demand is there for saddlebag support only... We'll see how it goes...
