Helmet Visors

I ask my dad the same thing. He wears an open face (Harley guy- go figure) I've been out on rides where the front of my helmet is just covered in bug carcasses. I hit something huge a few weeks ago that left a 4" gooey blob on my face shield. I don't know how he stands that crap getting to his face. Last time we were out riding, when we came to a stop he had something splattered on his cheek and didn't even know it. He's had bugs in his teeth, had a bee sting his lip, etc... Yet he still insists it's the only way he'll ride. Then again, he also wears plain jeans, a t-shirt with a leather vest, and cutoff gloves. Not exactly the smartest riding gear choices on his part. :spank: :banghead:

Well, too me "condensation" and the same as "fog", of course there's no fog on mine (fog's a gas)...
At least that's kinda of what I been trying to describe about when it's wet/cold out...

I guess, loosely, fog is just small drops that don't drip down and condensation is when the drops start dripping?

Have you tried cleaning and polishing it (the visor...:rof?

Its not really a fog. Its like it rained inside the helmet. Like throwing water at it. I guess it fogs at first really quick, but the visor makes it condense to water balls and droplets. Not sure what to clean it off with thats safe...

I'd been using RainX mostly. It works but it'll stop working after a couple days use so I have to reapply it.

Also for those of you wearing a clear shield and sun glasses, I thought about going this way but then I was riding and I saw a couple rocks fly by and hit my visor and helmet.

My helmet has some pretty long scratch lines along the side.

No, you misunderstood, I have the clear visor still, I just put my sunglasses on, then close the visor.... So, no bugs in the face and, actually two levels of protection, that gives an option of slightly cracking open the clear visor for a little more air without air in the eyes.
I figured if I get hit with a rock with the clear visor, it wouldn't be as noticeable as a mirrored visor. My mirrored sunglasses in the past have shown scratches pretty easily.

Hmm, sounds like you've created your own personal rain forest... Which can only mean very little or no air flow, such that all that humidity is trapped.

I just ordered the pin-lock visor and clear insert (will probably get a light smoke insert later).

After riding Fri in the rain, I just couldn't stand it any more so I swung into a local dealer on my way home. Guy at the shop had pin-lock for everything but my Shoei and said it was the "only way to guarantee a fog free ride". Total for visor and insert was $70, which is about what you can find it online, so I didn't mind getting it locally.

I'll let you know how it does and put up some pics once I get it in.

OH, he did have a $20 option as well, but it's a one time deal. It basically uses double sided foam tape to secure the insert, so once it's in, it's in and once the foam seal breaks, it's just a normal visor.

I split it both ways. If I'm in town I ride with it up and only drop it once I get up to around 50 mph or so. There's not as many bugs or loose rocks there and you spend time sitting at lights. Open visor is cooler and you can hear better which is nice. Once I get out on the back roads (where the bugs and rocks live) I drop it since I am absolutely not sitting still at all.

I like the Scorpion EXO-1000 helmet I picked up recently cuz it has a built in retractable sun visor inside the standard clear visor. The cheek pumps are a nice touch too...

I just recently bought a Dark Smoke visor for my HJC CL-15...it was supposed to be anti scratch but after the first ride I went to clean the visor off and there were scratches all over it. The only thing that hit me were bugs. The nice folks at New Enough shipped me a new one for free after I contacted them about the scratches.

From what I can tell thus far, all visors scratch- including my snowboard goggles etc.

Hairline scratches are ok and not visible when u have the helmet on. Just gotta try to avoid the big gashes I guess...

Sooner or later one way or another the visor wil scratch

I wasn't expecting it to never scratch, but after 1 ride on the highway...it should have been more durable than that.

One way to keep dried bugs from scratching is to drape a hot wet microfiber cloth over the helmet and let it soften the bugs so when you wipe them off with a dry micro fiber cloth it won't scratch so easy.

i wash mine with soap and water in the sink, but i only use my hands to scrub the bugs, no rags or anything.

What I do too. Cept with no soap, just warm water.

I wear a Scorpion EXO-1000 with a clear visor and use the pull down sun shade that it has built in.

Here's the Scorpion EXO-1000 I use. You can find them at various retailers for around $300. Very Comfy helmet. You can see the fighter-style flipdown sunshade in the photo.

I also like the flip down visor on the EXO-1000 so I can have eye protection if I want to ride some with my visor up and feel the air.
