2012 Fz6r - OTD price Tags -Insurance

I am strongly considering buying the 2012 FZ6R this week and would like to ask a few questions:

- Any reason why I shouldn't get the 2012 for OTD price of $7900?
- How much do the dealers normally charge on average for the tags?
- I am being offered 6mos of free gas with the deal. How do these free gas offers work?
- I don't have a car or home insurance. Stupid question: Do i need to sign up for insurance before i go to the dealership? How does it work? the dealer offered to search and provide the best insurance rate at the time of purchase. Is that a good idea?
-anything else I should consider or know before buying a new bike at the dealership?

I have been browsing this forum for a week now and have found it to be very helpful. I am looking forward to be part of this great community as a new rider and would really appreciate any suggestions and advice I can get before pulling the trigger. I have already purchased all my riding gear, and at this point, I really just need to buy a bike.

About myself: I live and work in NYC, and have already take the MSF Basic rider course. Once I get the bike, I plan on signing up for the advanced rider course either at the Ulster or the Brooklyn location.

A lot of these questions depend on your state, and it's been so long since I did anything in NY that I don't really remember the details and the laws probably have changed anyway.

$7900 OTD (including tax and all fees) sounds very good, knowing what NY sales tax is. In fact, sort of "too good to be true." But from your next question it sounds like he's not including the registration in the "OTD" price and maybe not even the sales tax, so maybe I'm a bit confused about what that includes. OTD should be "Out The Door," not "Out The Door before I add taxes and other fees."

The fee for the tags (registration) is not be up to the dealer. It's charged by the state, the dealer merely does the paperwork and collects the fee on their behalf. IIRC, in New York the dealer will give you the plates, in other states you sometimes get a temp registration and the plates are mailed to you directly by DMV once the dealer submits the paperwork. In any case, there should be no charge for this beyond the registration fee charged by New York State. This should be spelled out clearly.

"Free gas": Read the fine print and usually it says something to the effect of "six months of gas based on an average normal use of XX gallons per month..." Then they give you a gas station debit card good for the specified amount that expires after six months. The only source of definitive information about what this really means is the dealer. Again, this should be spelled out.

Unless the law has changed radically in NY, you won't be able to leave the dealership without insurance. Do not buy from the dealer. Shop it around in advance. You won't be able to get a binder from the insurance company until the dealer tells you the VIN from the specific bike you're picking up, but you should be able to get pricing and as soon as the details are in, they should be able to fax you or the dealer the temporary paperwork necessary.

Once you have insurance on one bike, the laws in most states allow you a few days of coverage on a new/replacement vehicle in order to update the policy.

New York is pretty strict with insurance. When I moved out of state (long time ago) and cancelled my insurance in NY, I almost immediately got a letter from the DMV telling me I had 10 days to either provide proof of coverage with a new carrier or to return the plates. If I did neither, the registration and my license would both be suspended and penalties would apply...

As to dealers in general? Most of them suck. Margins in motorcycles aren't very good to begin with. It sounds like this guy is giving you some mixed messages about what the "OTD" price is, and definitely trying to "help" you with insurance which in my experience is a bad idea. Beware.

Going to be expensive as hell to insure in NYC and might be just as expensive to park it, depending on exactly where you are.

Some dealers will help u get insurance on the spot via web registration or with on-site insurance agents.

OTD pricing varies by location. But generally speaking if u can get a new model year bike OTD- inclusive of fees & taxes etc- for close to or under MSRP, then that's a decent deal. Many buyers pay much less than that- depending on the model year or if the bike is slightly used or not.
