FZ6 Cam Install Project

Yeah, do t think there's any real power gains. Should run cooler and have better response.
Was holding revs when I let go of the throttle while testing in my yard, and does run cooler in motion (still hits 100c at a stand still).
It may not be much in terms of gains, but it is a good supporting mod for at least a filter swap

I just installed mine today. My usual machinist farmed out my cam gears to another shop and they screwed them up somehow. I even marked the holes to slot with a paint pen and handed them Solidworks drawings. I could have slotted the holes more precisely with a dremel, but at least the tolerances on the center bore are decent. That fiasco took a couple weeks longer than I would have liked.

I'd like to be reassembling everything at this point, but the crappy hazard fraught dial indicator holder I bought is useless. I can't find a way to get the dial indicator positioned over the valve bucket. We use a flexible holder at work with a magnetic base and hydraulic lock, which works brilliantly. I already set TDC on my timing wheel with my piston stop, so I just need to find a way to position the dial indicator and I can measure valve timing and adjust cams if needed.

I measure valve timing at work occasionally, so the only major difference was the lack of rocker arms and expensive dial indicator holders.
After shoveling 6" of snow, I made another trip to Horrible Freight and bought the dial indicator with the flexible arm that attaches to vice grips. Definitely no where near the quality of a Mitutoyo, but at less than 20% of the cost, and it was available at a store nearby. Precision is good enough, even with the semi-stable mount and flex arm. I eyeballed 102* ILC and 105* ELC when I installed the cam sprockets and the intake cam was spot on first try. I estimate accuracy of +/- 0.5*. The exhaust cam is extremely difficult to measure, so good luck getting a dial indicator in there without a tip extension. I put it all back together and it fired up with no issues, so I went back outside to shovel some more snow. It doesn't really sound any different, but my GPR exhaust with 1 of 2 restrictors overpowers the intake noise.

Scott, Martin

I've been having trouble putting my tensioner back in (compressed it and used that little locking slide), but how do I get full tension again?

Should tension up after you start bike. It relies on oil pressure to open. If it's back in you can crank the bike by turning the crank trigger. Probably won't be enough to open the tensioner. Make sure cam chain has some tension on it and holds timing when you crank by hand. If it does then put the cover back on and hit the starter. If you put the valve cover back on temporarily make sure to put the bolts back in. Don't have to be tightened, but you don't want oil shooting out. You don't wanna start the bike, just crank it in short bursts. First time I did mod my chain tensioner wasn't opened and when I started the bike I could hear the chain. Then the tensioner opened and noise went away. The other day I didn't have any problems putting cams and tensioner back together after fixing the cylinder head.
Cheers Scott, I also went through the tech manual again but having an "average Joe" explanation helps

It's always good to crank a bunch of times manually to make sure everything stays lined up and works as it should. Wouldn't want chain popping off as soon as you start the bike.
Last thing I want to happen, especially if I'm running ut down tge quarter this weekend

Damn, I'm really interested in doing this mod now too...

I have no issue with taking everything apart and putting it back together, I can follow the instructions in the service manual easy enough and I have 'handy' mates too.

Barriers -
  1. Obtaining some half-tidy FZ6 cam shafts in good condition
  2. Obtaining new FZ6R (XJ6) Cam gears, and finding a machining shop to fit them to the FZ6 cams, CORRECTLY
  3. Timing the new cam gears properly on re-installation

I reckon I could probably sort no. 1 out easy enough, but I don't know jack about local outfits for no. 2 or about timing for no. 3

Oh, ye all knowledgeable Marthy, wherest might I acquire the necessary FZ6 cams with the correctly fitted FZ6R gears? :D

Hi there, just simple question. Is there a difference between FZ6R and FZ6 cam gears?? Why just not using FZ6 ones?
