opposite sides? you kinda lost me on that. the instructions have you mount each clamp to a specific fork. but even if you switched the clams you would still have to fan the bars out far enough so that they wouldn't hit the tank with the wheel fully locked. assuming i'm understanding what you're saying. but it really doesn't change the riding position all that much. in fact i like how i'm leaning forward a tad more. it's not SS extreme but it gives me a better feel for the bike when turning.
the way i made sure they where each at the same angle was to semi tighten the clamps then fully lock the wheel to the left and measure the distance from the tank to a point on the handlbar at a distance i was comfortable with, then lock the wheel all the way to the right and measure the same distance to the same point on that handlebar. not super exact measurements but i prolly measured to within an 1/8" in accuracy, maybe better. then i fully tightened all the bolts.
Rob, now that you've had the clip-ons a while, how do you like them? Any regrets? How's the riding position now compared to the stock?
Yes, inquiring minds would like to know. I have always liked the woodcrafts and they aren't too expensive, but some say that the drop in the forks creates handling problems, while others say the opposite. I don't want to put a lowering link on since I am 5'10" and don't need the lowering link.

I have the apex clip on pretty low. My belly is usually within an inch of the tank, but I also have after market rear sets too.

Hey all, sorry for the late response. I've been without the computer for awhile. I'm happy to give some feedback.
Simply put, I love the clip-ons. Though I am glad I rode with the stock setup for awhile so that I could have a feel for the bike in it's stock form and have something to compare to. I don't have any regrets getting these. Though it was a pain while installing them to avoid the bars or anything attached to the bars making contact with any part of the dash/windscreen/etc. I was surprised at how much fine tuning it took to achieve this. Though I do have aftermarket levers and handlebar mounted mirrors too, so that added some variables that others didn't have to deal with.
The riding position is what I expected after reading the info on this forum. I got the 1.5 inch riser set and it only meant a slight lean forward (a couple inches) while still being able to ride upright with one hand. I didn't want an SS riding position so I was quite happy.
As far as the handling goes, I prefer the changes. Now I'm no expert and have been riding for less than a year so keep that in mind. When turning, the bike is more responsive and leans into the turn more. I find this makes turns easier and more enjoyable. I can make the same turn with less effort compared to the stock bars. I haven't noticed any stability issues but I'm just a casual rider (keep it under 80 and haven't done any track days). I never was on the freeway with the stock bars and only a few times with the clip-ons so I can't make that comparison.
I haven't put a lowering link on yet. I probably should have right away to keep the front and back even. I'm actually going to be putting one on tomorrow that I got from one of the guys on the forum. I don't need the bike lowered as I'm 6ft, but wanted to do it for the looks and had to since I mounted above the triple tree.
On top of all of that, they look BA! Of all the changes I've made to the bike, the clip-ons are my favorite. Not only did they improve the handling of the bike IMO but they also make the bike look so much better (fact, not an opinion ;-). They were worth every penny.

what aftermarket rear sets are you referring to?

I'm actually getting all of that, plus all the other white pieces I spray-painted, professionally done this week in an Arctic White. As well as the push pins and bolts on that inner cowl done in black for some nice contrast. Will be posting pics when it's all said and done.
