Did somebody say Toyota + SUV?
For that price range, if you are looking to ever go off-road, then get a pavement princess 4x4 FJ (one that has never been off-road, or barely off-road, with low miles), then build it up over time. As long as it is stock with 4x4, you are good to go; you can add all the 'spensive stuff over time, and get EXACTLY what YOU want. Just know that MPG and rear 3/4 view suck.
For me, having been off-roading for years, there is no other finer off-road vehicle (unless you have a $50k custom jeep or a fully built original H1, but they are too wide for most trails). It's like driving a tall cush Camry.
Option 2: get a gently used pavement princess 4x4 Taco.
Option 3: gently used XTerra.
If you are NOT looking to go off-road, ever, don't need 4x4, want something brand new, better gas mileage, and better rear 3/4 visibility, then RAV4 is a great vehicle.
Another option (smaller, and not a "true" SUV), is a Juke. I just love that car. It is such a happy little overachiever.
Good luck!
