No more speed channel!!

so I flipped on the tube the other day went to 583 which was speed on fios..::to my suprise there that channel is no longer speed but fox sports1 wth!?!?!!....there is rarely any racing on there and there is no automotive enthusiasts shows anymore :spank:

It happened August 17th:

Speed became Fox Sports 1.
Fuel became Fox Sports 2.

Fox Sports 1 will still carry NASCAR. They lost F1 to NBC. Probably not much else about motorsports. Those two are 95% of the motorsports market.

Fox Sports 2 will still carry UFC and similar stuff, but will lose the most of the niche extreme sports that also have a limited following.

And we'll all be asked to pay more for cable because of all the new mainstream sports programming that everybody "must have."

I just killed off my cable. Not enough there anymore that I care about. For me it was the transformation of all the Discovery channels into low-budget staged "reality" shows.

I DVR most of what I watch since I'm almost always busy, but I think most of the car stuff I watch is on Velocity. I don't think I've seen anything recently on Speed/Fox Sports 1

from a motorsports driven channel, to a "Broader" sports channel... as if we don't have enough "Broad" sports channels in the ever ending lineup of crap cable... Speed was one of the few channels I watched, when we went looking for motogp this last weekend, it was like, wtf??? oh, ok so they are still carrying the motogp, just dropped most of the others.... think we should all write FOX and tell them to bring back a motorsports channel, not yet another "Broad" sports channel...

I got rid of my cable several years ago and don’t miss it one bit. I don’t watch a lot of sports, and don’t care for “reality” , “competition”, and police/investigation drama shows, which comprises about 80% of TV these days it seems. I record everything I watch, and half the time the TV is only on for distraction vs. really watching. Too many people in this country are brainwashed that they need cable.

I remember when speed came out, it was pretty cool, they had lots of cools stuff like the rally racing etc. Then Nascar took over and never liked it as much as I’m not a big Nascar fan. F1 was about the only thing I watched religiously on it.

Here also. WAY too many sports channels that the big names like FOX/CBS/NBC & whoever owns ESPN basically REQUIRE the cable/sat companies to put on their lowest to middle teirs - basically MAKING everyone pay for the channels even if they dont want them. The only sports channels I watch are BEIN, CBSSports and Fox Sports 1 now I guess and all those are only for MC racing as I really dont care about car racing etc.. During end of racing season we will be dropping down to the lowest package available. Wish we could get Online WSBK, MotoGP, AMA more dependably than we currently can; then I could cut the cable/sat line also. Wish the CATV/Sat providers could get their way (and I think what most subscribers want) and get Ala Carte programming, but the Channels will not allow it because many know that they would lose too much so they tell the carriers you want this channel you have to carry these others and pay this much per channel per subscriber. Problem is (having worked in CATV) whencarriers try to resist the price increases, customers all get pi$$y because they want their channel and now its blacked out. However, they also get crabby when they get a price increase because of that channel.

I might start setting more and more of my shows onto HULU, because with PLAYON I can watch on my xbox w/o Hulu Plus costs. See how little we would actually have to use the Dish DVR for and see if we can drop that $90+ monthly cost.

Dont forget that you can also get HULU for free also! may just be delayed and not HD (unless you pay the $8/month for HD and next day viewing).

Yes, my girlfriend just had to chop her cable TV for cost reasons. She thought her "life would end" without cable.

I purchased a nice antenna for her and gave her my DVD player. She can borrow DVD movies from the local library. After three weeks of no cable, she is doing just fine without it and admits she was making a big deal over nothing.

I do DVR her two "can't miss" shows and she comes over and watches them. I pop some popcorn and it makes for a cheap date night.

She now admits "cutting the cord" wasn't as hard as she thought it was going to be.

I miss speed too, fox didn't have enough sports channels? the only reason to watch fox over ESPN was the fact that Fox has local channels vs. a nationwide one, fox sport west, fox sports rocky mountain etc. etc. The only reason I will ever tune in to FS1 is to watch Nascar which I am a big fan of. I can't figure out why speed sold out, seemed like they were doing good. In fact Nascar, football, baseball and the occasional history/discovery chanell is about all I ever watch.

I see this too, people blaming the carrier when stations get blacked out over pricing disputes. it's ashame, because time-warner (the local carrier) is actually trying to reduce thier costs, they can only absorb so many price hikes from the networks before they have to pass it on. The networks are really running the show, which sucks.

I use netflix and am currently trying out Amazon prime. I used to use Hulu, may have to give it another shot. I only need stuff not available from the main networks, I record all that OTA on my PC.

I love amazon prime, only 75 a year and get free two day shipping on everything as well as the free streaming. Plus they have all the new releases on there so if you want to pay for something you can do it on the same program and it all runs through my playstation which makes it nice and easy.

So far a big MEH from me. The "automotive enthusiast" stuff was mostly infomercials parading as DIY garage stuff. They were shills, nothing more. I would like to see more "mainstream" coverage of Indycar, F1, ALMS, Grand-Am and Australian V8 Supercars. Speed delays too many of their programs. Seriously - we're watching Nascar countdown while delaying Conti Tire Series 3 weeks? That's garbage.

This is what most of TV has become. "Reality TV" is chock full of sponsored brands, sponsored retailers, sponsored participants... you name it, it's probably there because it paid to be there.

More than half the stuff on Discovery networks these days is stuff that's there because somebody paid good money to make sure it is there. The other stuff is older shows they'd like to either phase out or find commercial tie-ins for.

If you're not especially into sports, like me, then there's less and less on that isn't a blatant commercial.
