Communicators...

Well, with the Sena I wear an EXO-1100. It's quieter than both my Arai, and Shoei ...

My communicator is the smh-5 and Brooke and I are on vacation and we used it today. With our lids down and at 60mph she couldn't understand anything I say. She got a lot of Wind noise and sometimes our talking would cut in and out so we couldn't understand one another. We just paired the headsets and using as intercom. What are we doing wrong

I would try using one headset to call a cell phone to see if you're having the same issue. Which mike do you use? I use the boom with the wind cover, and I'm told those I talk to can't even tell I'm on a bike.

I haven't paired it with another set, so can't comment on that.

Hard wired booms for each of us. Pisses me off spent all that money and it didn't even work for our trip properly :(

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried them off the bikes, to see if it's wind? That would drive me crazy... I'd be up all night trying to figure the issue...

Okay... I think I found a solution (that works for me).

As mentioned before... on my first ride with the SMH5 there was lots of wind noise (thanks to my cheapo SS1000 helmet) and putting up the vol was just killing my ears... so here's what ended up working for me...

Connecting earphones directly to my iphone to listen to music during the start of my ride (amazing)... then when using the SMH to call people, the audio switches from my earphones to the SMH... at this point the earphones only work to block out outside noise so I put up the SMH vol all the way up and VOILA! I can now hear the person I'm calling with clarity, they can hear me, my ears aren't going to explode... I'm happy :D

Ideally I would like to make the audio output come from my earphones at all times, but the only way to do that on the iPhone would be to click on the screen options when a new call comes in... very lame.

How far away were you? The SMH5 has half the range of the SMH10. On the boom for the SMH10, there is a front and back side. If it's the same on yours, the side with a small plastic 'fin' goes towards the front of the helmet. If it's backwards, you have the mic pointed into the wind instead of your mouth.

To help diagnose the problem, I'd try this:
Try using the intercom while stopped
Try while going slow, then 10mph faster, 10mph more....
Now try getting further apart to determine effective range
Also try calling her phone instead of using intercom

I know it's more money, but I really think the SMH10 is a much better deal. The SMH5 is $100, but then most people are spending more to get the better speakers. For $165, you can get the SMH10 which has better battery life, longer intercom range, decent speakers from the start, and the ability to change the boom/speaker configuration (I have one helmet that has the 3.5mm jack so I can use different speakers or headphones depending on how far I'm going to ride..) I realize it's too late now, but might help someone looking to buy a set later.

Well.. haven't heard anything about that wind noise, and cutting in and out issue, with the SMH5, you were experiencing, CC... Any luck with mitigating that?

I've had nothing but good luck with mine. Works perfecto... Even paired it with an SMH-10 a friend has, and communicated flawlessly at speeds up to about 70mph, at quite a distance apart... (maybe 800 yards?).

Then, I upgraded to the version 1.2 firmware (release candidate). Ugh. Could no longer get my music out of my phone. The SMH didn't even execute the command to pull up the music app (hold in the jog dial, wait for two quick beeps)... So, I rolled back to 1.1. Back to working fine.

Same ol' story: If it ain't broke...

BTW, I use Hearos earplugs with the thing, so I have it cranked up quite a bit, even with the larger speakers. No way I could stand the volume if I didn't have the earplugs in (which are rated at about 33NRR dampening -- so, they *really* filter out the world). Don't know if that makes a difference, but thought I'd mention it... They seem to filter out the wind, and still let the fidelity of the music through...

For anyone wanting another option... UClear came out with a new version of their device that allows for rider-to-rider communication via radio instead of the old Bluetooth version like I have. This will be my next upgrade when I have worn my HBC100s out or if the wife and I start riding a lot more.

That sounds interesting... However, I'm reading that the HBC200 (the new unit) uses Bluetooth 2.1, as opposed to built in radio? Perhaps it connects, via Bluetooth, to a radio device, a-la Midland? (The SMH's do that as well, and Sena has a multi-point radio device "hub" for that purpose). The 700m distance spec on the HBC would seem to confirm this.

My only concern would be the version of Bluetooth (2.1). If you're going to get into streaming HF music, 2.1 at 3Mbs (theoretical limit) doesn't compare to 3.0 at 24Mbs (theoretical limit), which the SMH has. And, from what I understand, 4.0 is on the horizon.

I'm an incurable "latest and greatest" freak when it comes to electronics (thus, my impatience to immediately upgrade the firmware on my SMH), so if I can find a 3.0 device, sub-$100, that I can upgrade to 4.0 (also for sub-$100), then I'm gold... I'm looking at these things as almost annually disposable, in that context...

Don't know how I missed this thread but I did. I looked for all kinds of bluetooth/communicators device to install in my helmet.

Well after doing several researches I decided to go this route

http://www.600cc.org/forum/f9/new-lid-26393/

It's been 3 months and I still love this helmet. Bluetooth works perfect with clear sound. helmet is very comfortable. Battery last a long time.

Ha ha i just bought a torc helmet. I just happened to come across them on ebay. I didnt get one with blue tooth though. Only reason i got it was because it matches my decal scheme of my bike perfect with the carbon fiber and red stripes. Im glad you like yours so i know i will be getting a good helmet. Im due to get it in a day or two.

Hello my real name is Adam.

Good catch... will have to wait for some reviews to see how well it works if it is indeed that type of connection. I'm addicted to the style of this setup, especially after seeing a Cardo Scala system in person. Uclear has the best setup, but maybe not the best functionality yet.

Well, Sena got back to me (quickly), and told me after the firmware upgrade to do a factory reset... which I did... Worked like a charm! So, now I'm back on the 1.2 firmware, and all works great --

Sena's going to be releasing a new headset (SMH10R). It looks like it has all of the same features as the current ones, but is slim/low profile, and uses a pair of large buttons rather than the jog dial the current models have. There are some details about it on their web site. I saw one at IMS the other day. It looked really nice (not nice enough to replace my SMH10 though :) )

Been looking for an excuse to buy a second for another one of my helmets...
*Really* like the low profile, but wonder how well it'll work with thick winter gloves (I already know the jog dial works great).
