So Ive been away from here for a while. I actually havent ridden since New Years day. And its got nothing to do with the weather. We've had incredible weather. And its been killing me that I'm not out riding in it.

Many of you know that I've had some major neck problems for almost 7 years now. Its the reason I ride the bike I ride and not a full blown supersport. While out riding with a friend and my cousin on New Years day, I had a major neck spasm while tipped into a corner. No I didnt go down. Honestly I dont think my line so much as wavered. But it scared the hell out of me. Since then I've gone in to see my doc about options. Last week we did a "trial" nerve block where he injected novocaine on the nerves that are causing the problems. It worked! At least until the novocaine wore off. So basically next month I go in for a radio frequency nerve block. Basically theyre going to kill the nerve endings. Should give me relief for about 9 months and get me off pain meds. But things have gotten so bad that I'm probably going to wait until after the procedure to get back on the bike.

Wish me luck! I'll let everyone know how things go.

Good luck Jon, doesnt sound fun. I have back problems and one of my biggest fears is it going out while im riding causing me to crash. i just kinda keep it in the back of my head to be prepared to take the pain and pull over. Hope it never happens. Let us know how the block goes.

Good luck, hope it works!

If you want another opinion, I took my wife to see a lady near John Wayne Airport twice and that has totally relieved her nerve compartment syndrome.

Wow, good luck man. Maybe after that you get into an SS? :) Something with some Helibars or something? :)

you def are taking the right path after what happened. its scary to think of having any sort of cramp or dizziness while riding much less in a cornering situation.


I hope you can get your neck issue resolved. good luck keep us posted.

Get'r done! It's the same reason I finally had carpal tunnel surgery. The first year I had my bike I hardly rode it, last year I wanted to, but carpal tunnel got so bad I couldn't and when I did I felt unsafe. I have back and neck issues too, but not as bad as you. Mine was controllable with chiropractic care for the most part. Good luck brother!

Hang in there Jon. Was wondering why we haven't seen u post for a while. Hope the procedure goes smoothly, successfully and that you get back into shape very very soon. :)

I feel ya bro....since my wreck in August when they put titanium plates on my ribs I've had severe muscle spasms to the point of tetany. I finally got into a good pain specialist(anesthesiologist) who diagnosed me with nerve damage from rib 4-12 on my chest wall. In January they did broad blocks with steroids in my spine. It worked pretty well up until about 2 weeks ago, but now where I had paralysis in the muscle, that is starting to wake up and I have some feeling now but I still have spasms though not as bad.

I go next month for my 6 wk check up and from what I understood if the first type of block gave me relief they will go in and select individual nerves to inject to get better results. If I got no relief they would go in and kill the nerves.

I'm so relieved to hear the spasms didn't cause you to lay down the bike! I wish you luck on your surgery and hope you recover quickly and can get back to riding again soon!

Thanks everyone. Working for my healthcare provider helps. ;) I have a little more insight than most when I'm being seen as a patient. I have complete confidence in Dr. McBeth. He's a brilliant anesthesiologist. I'm not worried about the procedure itself, even though Doc says it's really painful procedure. There are risks. But I'm confident in my doc and in our facilities and procedures. I get cervical epidurals every 4 months to combat the pain in the shoulder, arm, and under the shoulder blade. Those are even more risky. What I'm more worried about is the possibility that it won't work. This procedure does have a 70% success rate so I'm very optimistic. But I can't get my hopes up too high. What do I do if this doesn't work? I work in Rheumatology and see patients all day who basically just live with pain like I have for the rest of their life with no real chance of relief.

Even if it just gets me back down to the pain levels that i was at just 6 months ago I'll be happy. I'll be able to ride my bike again, get back into the gym and get some of this weight back off, and just be happier.

Thanks again for your words of encouragement. I can always count on you guys. (and girls ;) )

Good luck man.... I suffer low back pain and still going to the docs to find out what it is.... It has kept me off the bike for a while... I hope u het better and this fixes the problem....

So Sunday I went out for a short, slow ride with my Dad. Felt so good. We did cut it short because the wind was just getting insane and it turns out there was a brush fire burning close to where we were riding. Rather than risking anything we just turned around after about 45 miles and headed back. I could tell when I got home that it'd been a while since I had a helmet on. Even my ultra light Nexx Carbon helmet felt heavy. The neck was quite sore by the time I got home. I'm so looking forward to getting this done. I've never gone 2 1/2 months between rides. Even after surgery a couple of years ago. I was off work 2 weeks and back on the bike in 3. lol I don't know how you guys who live in the frozen tundras of the world do this "riding season" thing. :p

On the medical side, I talked to the chief in my dept at work (rheumatology) He said RFA is a VERY "dependable" procedure to treat this kind of issue. He said they do actually use this in some cases to treat some arthritis. So even if I do have some arthritis forming in the area, this could still help. 18 days and counting. :steve:

Good luck with the procedure. I have the same problems you have with my neck. The cause is probably different but I feel for ya and hope everything goes well!

Well. Just got home. That was seriously intense. When im wide awake and hes hot large needles in my neck and hes poking around and stimulating various nerves to make sure hes on the right ones. Holy crap that sucked. Gonna be completely laid up for a few days. Will take a few weeks to know exactly how well this is going to work.

That does not sound like fun, take it easy and rest up. hope it works out for you!
