You can get a "real" AR-15 but it has to be a "California Legal" one. I.e. check out this page and read the blue text that tells you what their California Legal option is. Olympic Arms AR15 Flat Top Carbine

Here is a quote from someone who assembled their own California Legal AR-15:

The Assault Weapons Ban in California bans specific makes and models of rifles by name. If you did not own one of those rifles before the ban was passed in 2000 then you can not legally own one in California now. Since new rilfe manufacturers and models are created all the time, it was difficult for the California lawmakers to keep the list up to date. In order to handle this situation, they also banned any rifle that has specific characteristics that are common with the types of rifles they were intending to ban. These characteristics, commonly referred to as "evil features" consist of things such as pistol grips, flash-hiders, and collapsible or folding stocks. The primary feature they were concerned with was a removable magazine. If your rifle does not have a removable magazine then it can have any and all of the "evil features". If your rifle does have a removeable magazine, then it cannot have any evil features. A product such as the Bullet Button creates a fixed magazine rifle. The MonsterMan Grip does not meet the definition of a pistol grip. By building your rifle using one of these products or other similar ones, taking care to fully understand the law, you can configure a legal AR-15 rifle for use in the state of California.

So yes, you can have one. Basically just need the magazine lock, or make it look lame as shit by removing all the "evil features' prohibited in the law.

You'd definately rather this than a .22

Buying a .22 AR-15 is lame as shit. It screams poseur. If you want a .22, buy a .22 rifle. A nice varmint gun or a target plinker. Nothing wrong with that, I'd like one. Buy buying a .22 AR-15 (unless it is for your kid) is like buying a Yamaha R-1 but getting a 50cc motor installed under the fairings so nobody knows. Not cool.

Also, John, if you do decide to take the plunge, try to find a good AR-15 that is 5.56, not just .223. Don't just take the seller or dealer's word for it either, it will have 5.56 stamped on it somewhere.

While the bullet sizes are the same, the 5.56 is the slightly hotter military grade ammo.

If you buy a .223 only, you can only shoot .223 ammo (well, technically you can shoot 5.56 out of it, but the overpressure could break your gun). If you buy the 5.56, you can shoot either ammo out of it safely.

The .223 only rifle might be a smidge more accurate, but only at distance and only on a bench...the 5.56 rifle has a bit more chamber tolerance to handle the higher pressure which will slightly diminish accuracy. The differences would only be noticeable at competition shooting.

Mine is a 5.56 rifle, and I was shooting .223 out of it at 100 yards last week. My last run after I finally got it sighted in, I put 5 shots into a 3/8 inch group. I'm not wanting for the extra accuracy.

I only started my collection a couple of years ago, and I started by buying a buddy's Ruger P94 .40. Next up was a Mossburg 500 12ga with tactical stock for home defense/zombie attacks. Then I got a Remington 700 30-06 in SS in case the world goes to shit and I have to start hunting my own food.

The most recent gun was a Walther PK380 in SS for my wife. She liked it out of all the guns we looked at because it felt really good in her hand and was very easy to rack the slide. Big selling features for her.

While I like the P94 a lot, I'd like to get a 9mm for general shooting as the ammo is much cheaper than my .40, even though my brother in law reloads, which helps with the cost, but still.

I'd also love to have an AR-15 like MadMike's. :gunenvy:

Awesome. I am planning on getting a PX4 Compact in 9mm for my carry. The 92 is huge and is hard to carry with a paddle holster. Works well with the shoulder holster, but clearly have to have a jacket on.

FZRblack, I agree, the 92 is just not a conceal carry gun. I love mine, and it's hands down my fav firearm I own, but it really is a military or police open carry firearm.

My current project(s).

The bottom rifle is my Dad's Norinco AK-47 (MAK-90 sporter). I bought it for him almost 20 years ago.

The top one is my newly acquired Saiga Russian AK-47.

The project, I am swapping out all the furniture on the Chinese one so it has the pistol grip. On order are Walnut pistol grip, buttstock, and Russian AKM pattern foregrips.

In order to do that tho, you have to stay 922r compliant. That means no more than 10 parts or sub assemblies can be foreign made. It's one of those truly retarded ATF laws that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals (NOT). So last night I swapped out the trigger group for a US made Tapco trigger group. The furniture is also US made, so now the gun will be compliant.

Phase two of the build is going to be staining and oil finishing the wood. Can't wait.

Based on how well this project goes, I plan on replacing the synthetic stocks with high quality wood ones on my Saiga as well. But the trigger swap is so clean and smooth, I'm also ordering the Tapco for it today as well. Will post pics in a few weeks or so when dad's gun is done.

about 4-5 years ago, i bought 2 two-toned springfield xds, a 9mm and a .40.

I gave the 9mm to my dad for christmas and kept the 40 for myself.
the difference in price between the two was about the same as the difference in price for a 100rd box. boy did i keep the wrong gun

If you take up reloading, you can make it a bit more affordable. Of course, then you have another thing taking up space in your garage, and another hobby sucking up your time.

One of the problems with reloading is that it'll usually void the warranty on your gun. Another is you'd have to shoot A LOT to make it worth the time and initial investment. I guess if you enjoy tedious, repetitive tasks, and want to spend more time reloading than shooting, and would rather buy a reloading setup rather than say, oh I don't know, a 1911 of your choice, than reloading might just be worth it for you.

I was shooting reloads with a friend once (his reloads). Somehow on one round he put in the wrong amount of powder, shorting it considerably. It was a ton of fun knocking that round out of my barrel with a wooden dowel later, I tell ya...
