Meh. Soccer is not my thing. Boring. My old boss came into the office last World Cup and was freaking out. Asked me if I'd seen the game the night before. Here's the conversation.
"it was the most exciting game I've ever seen"
"yeah. What was the score?"
"0-0 tie!"
I just kind of blinked
"So these guys are some of the richest most famous athletes in the world right?"
"Yes"
"And the point of the game is to score goals"
"Yes"
"And these guys suck so bad that they can't even achieve the point of the game once in 90 minute and that's exciting??"
He just kind of looked at me like I was the crazy one. Lol

At least in hockey they will get one or two goals in a game. Baseball can also have really low scores, and as a result, is quite boring. I never watch it on TV.
LOL, sounds like the conversation I had yesterday in the lunchroom... then, today they were showing the game on the bigscreen... went and watched for about five to ten minutes... walked in and asked what the score was... 0-0
yeah... asked why they kept kicking the ball back to their own goal... dunno, must be a defense strategy... got up and said, well, think I've seen the entire game in ten minutes... back to work

Soccer's a more nuanced game that I find is really only understood by those that have played the sport. Most see them kicking the ball back and forth, I see set-plays building. It's low scoring, but if you really watch, you'll see a lot of great shots combined with impressive goal-keeping. It's really what makes it exciting for me.
That is defiantly the MURICA way to look at it. but anyone who has ever played and understands the sport and knows how difficult and exhausting it is. a tie can be boring or it can be the most exiting game ever! you would need to understand how curtail every play is how difficult it is to accomplish in general let alone against the best players in the world.
what is funny is that I was taken to a baseball game by a pretty lady I could not say no lol and anyways watching the game I was amazed how the level of physical activity was slim to none for most players. im thinking to myself you call this a sport??? you stand out here for hours and hope you get some action for a minute at a time that may require a short sprint?? lmfao
yes I understand there is strategy, skill at batting, catching, knowing what base to go for depending on what base is occupied ect. but I guess that falls along the argument of calling poker a sport as compared to 90 game where players average 5+ miles per match with no strategy time outs only a short half time and only 3 subs.
anyways yes im excited to see the next round! Go MURICA and MEXICO although im certain they will both be eliminated this next round lol
past that I will root for Brazil and Argentina

I just started playing basketball about a year or two ago. started practicing improving enjoying it then all of a sudden watching it was amazing because I understood it now! I guess that's just how it goes.
I do agree with both of you that it's a sport you probably have to play to appreciate. EVERY single friend of mine who's a soccer fan played at one time or another. I was a baseball player from the time I was 3 until I blew my shoulder out my Jr. Year in high school. (I was trying to go to college on a baseball scholarship and I did have schools looking until I got hurt) I despise watching it on TV. But in person watching the technique and strategy is what I Love! And I miss playing so much. I tried to play again a couple of years ago and the shoulder just can't take it. Baseball players aren't endurance athletes, I'll give you that. But the physical skill required to be an excellent player rival any other sport out there. Hitting a baseball from a major league pitcher has been proven to be the most difficult thing to do in sports. If you have a 30% success rate through a professional career you're likely to go into the hall of fame. That's how difficult it is. And the skill and technique needed especially as an infielder is just insane. But I can see from an outsiders view not getting it. Just like I don't get soccer.
I was always a student of the sports I played. I was a football player too and I loved the details of the game. The mental side of the game. To this day watching football I'll see things that happen that other people don't. When I watch soccer, having never played or studied the game, you're right, I see a bunch of guys kicking the ball around and not being able to get a ball into a 25 foot wide net. Lol yet hockey (another game I don't really get) seem to score a HELL of a lot more and their goal is 1/4 the width.
And yes... Pitchers duels bore the hell out of me. 1-0, 2-1 baseball games are also boring.

I really enjoy soccer, especially World Cup. But like you say, it's a game you have to really understand to enjoy. I never played soccer much, but I've played hockey since I was like 4 and there are a lot of similar elements.
It was funny seeing Mexico eliminated for the 6th time in a row in the round of 16, but the penalty was definitely a debatable flop by Robben.

right they have always been on the chopping block. and there was light contact but it definitely looks like a dive after a few slow replays from dif angles. o well it is what it is now

Believe or not, some people know how to loose and understand that sports are meant to be fun. Chile made history on that game and the players were proud to have participate in such a match. Check this out.
