Seat Modification

Since the FZ6R seat gives me pain after 35-45 minutes of riding, i was thinking of modifying the seat. Not sure if this is a good idea on not..

I wanted remove the front seat, remove the staples from the seat cover and pull all the foam and replace it with silicone gel i saw on Amazon. (it's not intended for motorcycles, but i was thinking of trimming it to fit.

The seat is definitely a weal point of these....


I know others on the forum have had the seat re covered with a firmer foam, and or gel pads. I'm unsure how that pad will fair by itself though. Maybe re upholster, and use it as a supplement?

i think i am just going to get the gel pad (for motorcycle) from amazon and carve out the seat and place the gel in place, top it with a thin layer of memory foam (old memory foam pillow cut up) and use the smoothing foam that comes with the gel to level everything out and put the seat cover back on. I ordered some marine vinyl as well just incase the old seat cover does not fit anymore because of added materials. i will post pics when done

I have always thrown the gel pad (covered) on top of the seat... the problem with putting it underneath the leather/vinyl is that it heats up in the sun... and can down right burn you in the summer months...

Was it much better improvement from stock seat as far as comfort goes? or is it not worthwile. i was going to put the gel in and then use 1/4" thick memory foam over it.
i dont want to take the risk of cutting the seat if it's not much of an improvement.

I binge ride... 6-8 hrs plus per trip generally... When I had my Honda shadow it was a huge help over stock. On this bike it is an improvement but still wears out 3-4 hrs in... the nice thing is I can take it off and go back to the stock configuration and still get another hr or 2 before I am done...

The bad part is it raises you up 1-1.5" which totally changes screen and buffeting dimensions... I live and ride in helmet free states so it is less of an issue here...but a bigger issue in other places.

Dirt Road Custom Seats

Not sure if he's still in business, but I and numerous others have had their FZ6R seats modified by Eddie of Dirt Road Custom Seats. Do a search on it. He will mod your seat to be about 50% more comfortable than stock, and give it a nice new cover as well.

But i already butchered up my seat over the weekend because the gel i ordered came in friday evening, so Saturday i decided to carve out my seat and placed the gel in. Also, my old memory foam pillow, i cut up and topped over the gel (1/4") thick. I am waiting on the marine vinyl i ordered to come in because the stock seat cover is too tight now because of the pillow top addition. I think the hard part is done, now i just need to staple the new cover to the seat. i think the seat height will be a little higher but i don't mind long as my tail bone is happy...
My only dissapointment now is that i ordered the black vinyl. i should've order the burgandy color, it would've looked nice on my 2012 black/red raven. the fabric was really cheap on amazon, i might still order the burgandy one.

I would just buy the Purple [mattress company] seat cushion and then reupholster the seat with that
