Scorpion EXO-1000 Helmets $124.95 from SportbikeTrackGear.com
Backstory:
So as some of you know, I've been in the market for a new helmet for a while. I've had my issues with my EXO1000 for a while and it all came to a head when I tried on a Shoei Qwest, which is why I stated in a couple threads I was considering either the Qwest or a Bell RS-1.
So why did I go with a cheapy Vega? A couple reasons:
1)Cost. With my bills as they are I have to be pretty nit-picky about larger purchases. As I'm looking at refreshing most of my gear, not just my helmet, I couldn't spend $300 on a helmet when the one I had was still technically functional.
2)Convenience. I hate carrying around my helmet when I ride places. I would much rather just lock it down on the bike. With a $300 helmet I would be extremely paranoid about someone cutting it off the bike and running away with it. With a cheap helmet like the Vega I can comfortably hook it to the bike and not worry about it. Why? Because it's a Vega. I can't imagine many would go through trouble to steal a cheap helmet. In the off chance they DO, I'm out $70, not $300.
3)Looks. This kind of ties in with cost too. The Bell and Shoei helmets that have matching colors to my bike are $400+, so I would go with a plain white in both cases. The Vega has a matching color scheme, and the design looks cool IMO.
Now the comparison:
Looks: The EXO1000 doesn't match my setup hardly at all. The Vega matches nearly perfectly. WINNER: Vega Attitude
Comfort: Both fit my head comfortably from a size/padding standpoint, but the Vega is MUCH lighter. WINNER: Vega Attitude
Build/Quality: One of the top vent covers already came off on the Vega. This is where you understand the difference between a cheap helmet and a more expensive one. The vents, snaps, and visors are definitely more solid on the Scorpion. No surprise... WINNER: EXO1000.
Safety/Certifications: EXO1000 - DOT and Snell 2005, Vega is DOT and ECE. Winner: Tie because I trust both.
Air Flow: I could be wrong, but I feel like the Scorpion may have been better suited for a SS posture. Air flow, while not TERRIBLE was never really good for me. The Vega's vents are definitely set up for my style of riding, much better air flow(mainly the chin vent). WINNER: Vega Attitude
Wind Noise: Ah the double-edged sword of better air flow. At first I couldn't really tell the difference, then I went above 50mph on the Vega. Vega is definitely louder. On the Scorpion I could always hear my stock exhaust no matter how fast I was going, with the Vega my exhaust becomes completely drowned out above 50 mph, which annoys me. WINNER: EXO1000
Overall: I'm keeping both helmets, but my primary helmet will be the Vega. The wind noise is annoying, but I could throw in ear plugs to take care of that. Pretty sure I can order a new air vent and mod it to be a little more sturdy as well. Everything else favors the Vega(which is a little surprising given the cost gap between the two...well the original cost not the closeout cost). Honestly when it really comes down to it, the weight is the killer for the EXO1000. I wanted a helmet that matched my bike, but the comfort difference is what really sold me on getting a new helmet sooner rather than later.
Side note: Sizing. My EXO1000 is a XL and the Vega is a L(for anyone interested).
