My bike died....strange

New Member
3 times today. Twice while stuck in traffic. Was stopped for a little bit so I turned it off. Started back up fine, but as soon as I put it in 1st it would die. Clutch fully engaged, it would just die. I put it in 2nd and it was fine. Stopped again and did the same thing. Off for a while, started right up, died as soon as put in 1st. Start, put in 2nd, no problem. The last time I pulled in my driveway, clutch in, as soon as I came to a stop it died. Started right back up, no problems.

Bike is brand new, 600 miles. Going to take it to the dealer, just figured I'd ask if this ever happened to anyone else.

Kickstand switch maybe damaged? Not sure why it wouldn't happen in 2nd gear though. With 600 miles I'd take it back to the stealership on principle.

Back when I had mine if I would kill the motor then restart the bike it sometimes acted funny and died. I think the ecu gets confused and messes up the fuel delivery when you turn it off and back on. Just a thought.

agree, we seen a lot of kickstand switches not set up right, but let the dealer fix it, it's under warranty...

Does it die when you shift into 1st, or when you start releasing the clutch?

Something very similar was happening on my Yfz450.After I rode for 20-30 minutes a clutch sensor would vibrate loose.After coming to a complete stop it would kill the engine as I released the clutch.

A trip in the back of my truck to the dealership always made the connection vibrate back together and it would take off fine for the mechanic.

They came to the conclusion that when it was on the showroom floor, a kid must of grabbed the cables and wires going to the bars as they were climbing on the atv and pulled a connection loose.

Take it back until they figure out what was causing the problem.They might not figure it out the first time, but in my case they fixed the problem after my warranty expired since I brought the atv in and reported the problem before it expired.

If it does it again, check the odometer for an error code (i.e. 19).

When you turn it off for the short time, are you using the key or the kill switch?

What is your bike idling at? normally putting it into 1st gear though will give you a clunk or jerk and if your idle is too low it could be that you're effectively stalling the engine out.

other than that I don't have any suggestions other than take it to the dealer and have them look at it.

I use the key. Neutral, kickstand down, clutch out, key off. Then key on, start, kickstand up, clutch in, the second I put it in to 1st it dies. Don't even get the chance to start releasing the clutch.

Very odd issue for sure. Taking it to the dealer Sunday.

Is it really a "stealership" when you want them to fix something for you?
Never could understand that term. (Not picking you out specifically, I see that term numerous times a day).

Depends on how much they charge you. I've had dealership be awesome and help out... I've had other dealerships pull old used air filters out of the trash can and bring it up to me saying it came from my car and needed to be replaced for an extra $100.00 during maintenance. All depends upon the dealership.

I am thinking back to the dealership or service shop for warranty inspection. I agree with another post, I doubt it is the kick stand switch otherwise I would think it would do it in 2nd gear also.

Before you spend the time going for service though, have you checked the measurement on your clutch freeplay incase someone messed with the adjuster?
