Your idea putting them in the rear may help me get around the whole integrated tail thing. PA (or at least where I take my bike for inspection) said the rear signals had to be 6 inches apart. If I put those light strips 6 inches apart or more it meets their requirements. I put integrated mirrors on inititially because they didn't like the flushmount visibility. I have since as you know added the pods and went back to my carbon zx6r mirrors.
