Fluctuating RPMs

Hey guys,

So I've been noticing that my rpms fluctuate slightly at idle. Any idea what this could be related to? My buddy's ZX6R has steady rpms.

No, even when cold. It does that all the time.

Pretty normal mine does the same. In fact all bikes do this especially if they have an analog tach like ours does. My buddies r1 is even more noticeable.

Hmm..really? What about my buddy's 08 ZX6R which also has an analog tach, but is rock steady?

I wouldn't worry about it unless its so significant that its causing to the bike to stall

Especially cold mine does it worse than that, I attribute it to the GIANT 31mm cam we have. I have a full exhaust system as well and that I notice made the needle move more when cold! You don't have a thing to worry about!

Doesn't the ZX6R tach start at like 4k (4ish)? You know what I mean? The 0-4k are compressed such that the 4-16k takes up most of the gauge? If so, then he just doesn't have the resolution to see a couple hundred rpm "jumps", ours is linear so you can see it.


How many miles on the bike? I found after I did the throttle sync, the idle went a lot smoother, but I wouldn't do it until its time, give the engine its break-in (not just the 1k, but to really settle, let the ecu do its thing, etc.).

I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts jumping by 300-500 rpms...

I have the autotune with the O2 sensor. Thw warm up map is kind of off a bit. It run very rich until it hit about 180F. Pass 200F it get a bit more rich too.

I have my PCV set at -10 at idle. It stays around 13.5:1 FR pass 200F it go down to high 12:1

I had it all sort out when the Water temp was hook to the PCV. You can adjust that easily. I kight still have the setting somewhere if you ever need them. I had to disconnect it to plug the MAP sensor.

Were the throttle boddies ever synced? That may help a lil. but honestly it seems normal like eveyone is saying, especially if the bike is not fully warmed up.

Bike was fully warmed up in the vid since I just rode 35 mins home from work. No, I doubt the throttle bodies were ever synced. How do you do that?

Your rpm is barely fluctuating in that video. I have a 09 and mine does the same thing. If you are expecting the needle to stay pinned in one spot I dont know what to tell ya. As long as the bike is not cutting off or idling too low/too high you will be fine.

My only minor issue is after a restart when the bike is still warm the rpms bounce enough to make the race car wop wop wop sound until I blip the throttle a few times and the idle smooths back out. Not a real issue either.

The first time I synced them, it didn't last one ride. I did it again a few days ago, only I used some nail polish to hold the screws in place.

There's still some fluctuation of the tach, but it's much lower, and the bike sounds pretty awesome at idle. I'm going to swear that it accelerates more smoothly, as well. Though I admit that observation is very subjective.
