Could have been much worse

Some idiot backed into the back of my bike in a parking lot and pushed it off the kickstand. Bent the handle bars and clutch lever, scratched the edge of the mirror, bar end, clutch cover, and turn signal, and also popped out a plastic panel and the turn signal. Very lucky it was not more damage and I was able to ride it home. Having the helmet hanging from the passenger foot peg saved it from more damage. The bike runs and rides fine but the left handle bar now hits the tank and even though I like the way the clutch lever wraps around my hand when I shift it looks stupid and I want to replace it and the handle bar. If you were me what would you do as far as replacing these parts.

Failing that, replace stock levers, bars, signals, and mirrors with aftermarket replacements. The other parts you'll either have to live with or spend a good chunk of cash on replacement parts (I'd check stadiumyamaha.com if I was you), or if you're good at it, try repairing those scuffed parts yourself.

Sorry this happened Totally sucks, but like you said- it could've been worse. A bottle of Forever Black or Back to Black may help touch up the crank cover- though it requires some practice and may take a few applications.

To be honest, the damage to the turn signal appears to only be on the base of it (only you will notice), you can fix the way it's turned down by pulling apart the rubber fitting that has been pulled loose from the fall. I can't see damage to your mirror but if you want to replace it, I included it in the information above, (also a chance to put on custom mirrors at this point if that floats your boat), these are all OEM replacement parts, that will restore your bike to what it was before it fell over. Scratches on crankcase covers, waterpump covers, etc... will happen.. if you want to replace it those are included up top too. There are tons of oem dealers out there if that's the route you want to go. Above are parts for a 2010 FZ6RZW, check your title information for specifics if you do not know specific model. In this case the parts above will not matter because they aren't specially colored for specific models... You probably won't even need the sub box assembly unless the plastic anchors in the molding have been crushed/pinched/warped by the fall. It happens, I have seen it a lot on the repairs I have done for others. If you are lucky you just need to disassemble the front left side and snap it all back together. Wish you luck and hope this points you in the direction you want to go! :thumbup:

Thanks spawn for that great info. I am very lucky at how little damage was done. Took the fairing off today and the turn signal popped right back in with no damage other than a big scrape on the bottom that you can't see. The box assy went right back into place with nothing broken after being pushed out of place when the turn signal got pushed up against it. A black sharpie hid the scrape on the crankcase cover well enough and the scrapes on the mirror and bar end are hardly noticable. A tiny scratch on the fairing is impossible to see thanks to a white paint job. The new look of the clutch lever is starting to grow on me and I can brag that I have a custom bent lever that wraps around my hand for better shifting performance. LOL Having the handle bar hitting the tank is annoying but it is only hitting on the rubber grip so no scratching of the tank and I don't notice the bend when I ride. I will replace it but I have never done it before so I will have to look for some online tutorial on swapping them out. The bumper of the car pushed directly on my license plate and did no damage to anything on the tail of the bike other than a little scratching and bending of the plate. So lucky on that one. If I had a fender eliminator it could have been a lot of damage and I am sure the helmet hanging on the passenger peg took a bunch of the hit as it fell over. I really can't tell how a frame slider would have helped but all in all I couldn't be happier with the way the bike handled being knocked over by a car. Enough typing, time to go ride.

Frame sliders do serve their purpose... but it depends on which ones you buy and what you expect out of them. They can serve as impact points if your bike falls over, often avoiding scratches and keeping your cowling from getting popped out from pressure. Some people think they are going to save your bike from getting ground down in a "in motion" drop... which almost always leaves people disappointed. Go figure... derp derp.

Also, out of curiosity... I noticed your front tire is straight in the latest photo... do you often park your bike like this? If so, I highly recommend tucking it to the left and wheel locking your bike... it's not only for security purposes. Also, depending on how your bike fell... having your helmet on the edge like that did protect the left rear of your bike, but also could have caused your bike to impact with more force on the front end, resulting in your bent handlebars and clutch lever. Keeping your handlebars tucked in and locked with a combination of frame sliders (if you like frame sliders) will aid in you not having bent hardware after the fact. Glad it turned out to not be so bad! Rubber side down! :thumbup:

Interesting observation spawn. Now that you mention it I had gotten into the habit of leaving my bars straight when parked in a parking space. Now I am wondering if I would have done more damage to other parts of the bike with the bars tucked in. A busted mirror, broken plastic, smashed turn signal could have added up to a lot more than a bent but useable lever and bent but functional bars. We need to nominate some members to do some drop tests with their bikes to see what does less monetary damage, bars tucked in or bars straight. But seriously, it is almost liberating to finally get a few scratched on it. Still can't believe my bike got hit by a car and you have to look close to see damage and I don't have to replace any parts if I don't want to. How lucky is that.

Thanks for that link, looks like they have a lot of interesting stuff. The person that saw it happen was too far away to see the cars plate. He said they backed into it so slowly that they might not have realized they did it as they pulled away, but that is hard to believe.

Not to hijack, but a similar thing happened to an acquaintance of mine about 3 or 4 months ago. An illegal immigrant in a pickup truck backed into her 2008 CBR600RR in an Irvine parking lot.

Needless to say, the guy was frantic and tried to get away. Luckily, it was a busy shopping plaza and witnesses saw what he did and a good samaritan blocked him in preventing him from fleeing the scene.

And, of course she said the the guy had no license, no vehicle registration, no insurance, no job, nothing. He was admittedly, an illegal immigrant. And, basically he said- I have nothing and the truck's not even mine. What do u want me to do?

Needless to say she was pissed. $1500 damage to her bike and she had to use her own insurance to cover it.

Do ppl honestly believe that it makes any logical sense to give illegals drivers licenses? They already can't afford to pay for insurance or their vehicles. So why would they then want to come out of the shadows? How would this benefit anyone? What- so they can break the law more openly and have their cars impounded and pay the extra DMV fees that they are getting away with not paying now and make it hard to tell if they're illegal or not?

Sheez.
