Use a tether either way. Just in case. Cheap insurance. Never had it fall off except on the tank of my FZ8. Just not a flat enough spot for it there. On my FZ6R and R6 I used suction cup almost exclusively on the fairings. Never an issue.

I think I posted this somewhere else in here, but I wouldn't trust the GoPro suction mount on the fairing...

*However,* I've already used this a number of times, over 85mph, over speedbumps, and in high wind... I would trust this on *any* solid purchase on the bike -- totally different from the GoPro mount. I even used it to help *carry* a number of glass tops for a bedroom set. It's a RAM mount:

Suction Cup Base - 3.25" Diameter Suction Cup with 1" Ball

A bit of spit on the cup and run your finger around the cup before putting on helps. I've only used it on the tank and always use a tether, but it hasn't come off from the tank.

On the fairing is asking a lot more, but I've seen people (on youtube) use them on the outside light planes which cruise at about 160-200 km/h.
