I saw this while doing my oil change. Does not look that bad...

Upon further inspection...

My bike has around 25,000 miles, is used for commuting and is ridden in the rain regularly. I have been lubing the cable but was forgetting to inspect it.

what lube?

I road in the rain day-in-out for the first two years, but also have a covered shed at home and keep a rain cover at work... I don't ride in the rain any more because it puts wear on the parts like that (mainly, my exhaust was getting surface rust bad, but also bolts and any other metal)...

I never had that happen to my cables though, just replaced them last year at around 50K miles and had one thread gone, between throttle and clutch cables... I use Dri-slide, liquid graphite based lube

Yep!

The shifting feels better now but not sure if it was the replacement clutch cable or the oil change.

HM I've lubed up my cables every other oil change but have never fully inspected them. Gonna have to go over them just in case. I commute year round.
