And get it cleard.If you wanted more sound but also wanted to appear to stay within the law, gut the factory cat. I guess it's much harder on our bikes than a standard car cat. Chop it in half and reweld? You'll still probably be quieter than most SS and Harleys but appear 100% stock to law enforcement.

CA AG has successfully sued a couple of dealers since this law went into effect, and the result is that no dealer in California will openly sell or install one even for pre-2013 bikes on which they are still legal. (Exceptions are the manufacturer-offered options that are generally compliant.) Independent accessory shops that don't do installation are generally in the clear. Indie mechanics who do installation but don't actually sell the things have so far not been targets.In tye 3 years since ive put on my exhaust ive been pulled over twice. Once got a warning for speed. Second he hit me with everything. (double yellow, basic speed law, excessive diaplay of speed) he had all the chance to write me up for my exhaust and he didnt. Not even a mention about it. And mine is obnoxiously loud. You really dont have much to worry about.
And youll still be able to buy them everywhere. When you buy an aftermarket exhaust it says right on it for track use only. That eliminates the shop from any liability.

That's what I'm saying, is you can still buy them all over the place. May not be as easy to get installed if you don't do your own work. But getting a hold of an exhaust isn't going to be much more difficult. Worst case, order it online and do it yourself. The targets, so far, have generally been the HD dealers who have historically pushed people into straight pipes right out the door. Targets for enforcement, in this area anyway, have also been the Harley types -- the ones who make fun of riding around setting off every car alarm along their path..
The law technically applies only to 2013 and newer models, so they couldn't have gotten you in any case.
That said, I really don't think there's much threat unless you're both doing something else dumb, and being a complete jerk. The reality is the cops don't want to have to start crawling around looking for the EPA certification that is usually etched in tiny and barely visible lettering anyway.
I regularly chat with a group of LAPD motorcycle officers who stop by one of the local coffee shops. Motorcycle duty is a volunteer thing, so the guys who are doing it do it because they like riding. Mostly they have bikes of their own and ride in their private lives too. They don't want to hassle bikers any more than they have to.And your last statement it spot on. Last thing cops want to deal with is this kind of dumb *** law.

The aftermarket exhaust pipe would simple just run threw it but appear legal to anyone. I did this on my car and haven't had any issues even with a close inspection.
Nobody who enforces the rules here cares, and no other state seems interested in jumping on the bandwagon at this time.It would be in the best interest of companies to get the EPA tags on systems. Cali may be first but I doubt it will stop here.

Tha major hit has been to RUBs and the H-D dealers who used to upsell them to insanely-overpriced straight pipes. The H-D dealers have had to find other chrome-clad accessories to sell to the unknowing.
