My dad has a 2011 Yamaha FJR and we ride everywhere together. Before our last ride of 600 miles I changed my front sprocket to +1. When we got home from our trip my odometer read something like 585 and his was a little over 600. I just wonder if they have always been off or did it happen when I changed the gearing on my bike?

Yes, changing gearing will will affect the odometer on the FZ6R and most newer bikes.

Going from 16 to 17 teeth is a 6% change. But 600 vs. 585 miles is only a 3% difference. Your odo may have been a bit high originally (some people have claimed this), or your dad's could be off a bit. Tire pressure matters, too.

Anyway, your dad is a cool guy.

*UPDATE* My dad and I finally got back on the bikes at the same time. I was using my dads Garman 305 gps unit. My speedometer and the Garman were almost exact, only off by tenths which is no big deal because the bike doesn’t even have tenths. Now my odometer was a different story. The Garman said I rode 78.07 miles and my bike said I rode 75.1 miles. My dad’s stock FJR’s odometer read 79.9 miles. Also the corrected top speed of our bikes is 130mph this speed was hard to obtain on the gps unit. It took a very long straight, full tuck, Two Brothers exhaust, and Juice box. All and all a great day!:)

odometer

I did a ~250 mile trip yesterday. My destination is 123 miles by Google maps from door to door by the route I took there and 124 on a slightly different return route. Odometer said 123 on the way there and 125 on the way back. On the way back I did stop for fuel and the way back to the highway added a little. In any case, it looks like the odometer on my stock 2011 is within %1 accuracy with Google maps. I will test more and see what I get. I want to test the speedo at some point.
