went to start my bike, haven't for about 24 hours, to move it, and i had oil dripping out of one of the overflow tubes. i just began letting it warm up, maybe 30 seconds elapsed when i noticed about a 3" diameter circle of oil, with drips still coming out of the longer tube.
i shut it off, checked oil level and it was about 1/2 way on the checkers.
started it back up, moved it to a different garage down the street and it didn't have any drips.
what am i missing? it may be covered in the manual, but all my stuff is packed in boxes right now, and i don't know where to look.

Are you sure its oil? It probably is just the coolant.

pretty confident it is oil. i even tried wiping it with a paper towel. i got a little on there but it wouldn't pull it up. there is actually a stain still out there.

I too have noticed a small amount of oil coming from the longer tube but mine has never "dripped" but just formed a drop at the tip of the hose. I wiped it up and left it alone.

ive seen it on my tube a few times and just wiped it off as well. this was the first time it actually dripped enough to leave a nice little stain on the driveway.

what are the two tubes actually attatched to? (i don't have it here with me now).
i think the shorter one is for the coolant, but what is the longer one?

I am pretty sure one hose is attached to fuel tank, maybe water drain from tank?
because when i lift my tank up, the hose lift with it.

both hoses are vents for the gas tank.

+1 They are for the gas tank. I made the mistake of lifting the tank while full and ended up spilling some as overflow from those tubes. :banghead:

I'm pretty sure one tube vents the overflow from the fuel tank and the other is the overflow for the coolant reservoir.

You are checking your engine oil with the bike in the upright position and not on the kickstand right???...cause if you're not you might have overfilled your oil sump and that could be coming out of an overflow somewhere...

Yes check the bike in the up right position. Both tubes go to the gas tank, One is the overflow for fuel and the other is the breather hose for the tank.

Yep, your right. I looked it up in the service manual too. Maybe there's oil running down the outside of the tube from a leak somewhere?

thanks everyone. i had just filled it up with gas before i parked it before i noticed this problem. i assume and am hoping it was gas, eventhough i can still see a stain on the driveway after 1/2 inch of rain.
and btw, i put 3 quarts in and check while sitting on it and it is 1/2 on the checks.

Your "stain" is of course going to show up when it's raining because gas is oil and will separate from the water.

I'm seeing the same thing, but when it's in the garage, I don't see this circle. But if I have it parked in the sun all day I see it. So is the gas possibly expanding and going out the overflow tube? (Though it's weird how it's oily, but possibly due to the heat?)

It also may have something to do with road grime in the overflow tube, dust, etc. It sits there, theoretically dry all the time, and particulates flow in and out of that tube at will. Then when you actually have fuel flow through it, it takes the grime along with it. No pics posted, so I can't see what you're referring to, only guess.

There is no such thing as an oil overflow, that's why it's so important to fill it right the first time. Too little oil and it seizes, too much and it blows up from the pressure.

Now, I did have a leak with my oil system, the filter wasn't tightened fully when I bought it and it would leak while the engine was running. It would then run down the drip pan, fall on the exhaust, and then let gravity and acceleration forces take it everywhere. Took taking the whole fairings off to find it for sure, then it's a beeyoch to clean up fully. If you're sure it's oil, I would check the drain plug and filter for tightness, ensure you have the proper full level by using a stand and checking it again, and then start checking seals as you may have blown one.

Do the sniff test. Stick your nose in that spot the next time you see it as fresh. Gas is obviously unmistakeable, oil will smell sweeter and less strong.

Good luck and hope you find it.
