So I have a brand new '11 FZ6R and soon I'll be getting my Targa FE kit and Proton Flush mounts in the mail. I will be taking the BRC course here shortly and then getting my base stickers. My only question is does anyone know if these are 100% street legal or should I wait till after I have my stickers to get on base before making the mods. I really don't want to show up for the course and be turned around due to it not being "street legal".

 Your motorcycle MUST have current registration and insurance.
 Your motorcycle MUST be in good running condition, including tires.
Your motorcycle MUST meet all State and base vehicle code requirements.

I know I probaly SHOULD wait but you all know what it was like when you all got your first bike.... Any experience from any military members out there would be appreciated. Also it's a San Diego Navy base since I know various branches have more lenient regulations than others.

I'm suprised that they are letting you do the BRC on your own bike. Most Air Force bases do the same thing that the civilian BRCs do, have a shed full of 250's to trash. Its only the ERC and ARC that you have to have your own bike for.

I'd just wait to do the mods. At the very least, they are going to have you do a couple of lane change exercises and they watch for the turn signal use. May as well make it easy for them and use the stock ones. After that, its just digging into the regs to see if they are legal. If your guards are anything like the guards here at Moody, as long as you're wearing your PPE and don't have a bike leaving a trail of parts behind it, you'll get on base fine.

But before all that, see if they have a 250 that you can use for the course. No sense in possibly busting up your bike, even if its from another rider hitting you. And those little 250s are pretty easy to throw around. And actually pretty fun.

Keep in mind that even if the course is on base, the MSF courses are not "military" courses. They just happen to teach them at many bases because the DOD requires completion to ride on base. With that being said, I've been riding on base for almost 20 years (yeah I'm an old guy) and none of the mods you are doing are against the rules (Air Force), however with the FE mod, just make sure your plate is fully visable. As far as being street legal, that is more of an off base concern than on base. If I were you, I'd call your local base safety office if you have questions specific to your particular base.

Like Dark said, make sure you have your PPE and you should be good to go. Gloves, helmet (eye protection if half face), shoes/boots that cover your ankles, pants (duh), long sleeves and an outergarmet that is somewhat reflective, although that one changes base to base.

Now as the old guy, my advice...after a few months of riding, take the advanced rider course and the sportbike course. You can never have too much training, especially when the military pays for all of them. I have taken all 3 and learned something from every one of them. I took the sport bike course after I'd been riding for 15 years and realized just how many bad riding habits I had developed. Okay, off my soap box now.

My .02 cents!
