So I'm planning on painting my windshield this weekend. I got the proper spray paint, the Krylon Fusion. I'm just wondering what I need to properly do in order for a good paint. I know wash it, but anything else?
Wash it with soap and water. Might want to wipe it down with some alcohol to make sure the oils are all off. Also mask the outer edges so you don't get over spray. Also make sure you paint the inside (closer to the rider) of the screen. You just blacking it out?
Yep. I thought about buying the tinted FZ6R double bubble from Yamaha, but I really didn't feel like spending the money on that when I could spend $4 on the spray paint and spend that extra time with my bike. How many layers of spray is normal?
It took about 6 or 7 for me but you want to do it VERY light. The first coat should be an extremely light "orange peal" coating. Each successive coat should also be a similar, super light coat so you don't get runs. Make sure it's even. Do it in sun light so that before each coat you can look through it to see if there are any thin spots so you can make sure it's an even coating. Hold the can about 18" away from the surface and spray in full strokes from end to end. I'd suggest strokes that go top to bottom. It'll be easier to get a good coat without having to account for the curve if you go side to side.
^^ That's pretty much how I did mine. I did super fine coats and just applied several for a super smooth and near-flawless finish. I even stenciled the FZ6R logo at the bottom of the screen. Looks Great!
