Purchased mine in late April and have about 3,000 miles on it and love it. Have bought a tinted windshield and changed the screws that hold the windshield to black spikes and also just put on my tank pad on this morning here are some pics..

Welcome! Glad to have another new member, and good choice by the way. As far as suggestions, just remember that opinions are like buttholes, ha ha. Look through the "Post all your pictures here" thread and find out who has what looks good to you and do some research on what it's called and where to get it. The first thing I always do to my bikes is buy frame sliders and a gas tank pad. A large number of us recommend or use either T-Rex no cut sliders (if you can find them, I think everyone is out at the moments), or Shogun no cut sliders.
As for the tank pad, I always get them through ImmortalGraphix.com. They have a good selection of designs and shapes, as well as the ability to make custom ones and the quality is very good. Plus if you use the coupon code "GRAPHIX" you'll get 10% off your order.
Other mods are dependant on your style and budget. For performance mods, I'd search through Marthy's threads. Good luck and have fun.

Oh, and as far as gear goes, always get the best gear you can afford, and I'd recommend wearing at a minimum helmet (always!), jacket, boots, and gloves, all designed for motorcycle riding. Revzilla.com is a great site to find gear as they have very good review videos and a great return policy if what you buy doesn't fit.

Welcome to the forum! As for performance get a exhaust system, fuel controller, and dyno tune to start with. For the gearing it depends what you are using the bike for. If you want more torque but lower top speed go with a -1 sprocket in the front and a +2 in the rear. If you want more top end and less torque simply go the other direcetion! Pretty much any advice you could possibly need is avaiable. But as always use your own discretion when modifing your bike!
